Post Holes & Setting
Posts are driven 36″–42″ deep — below Manitoba’s frost line — using a post-pounding method, with no concrete under standard conditions. Winnipeg’s clay-heavy soil holds moisture, and the freeze-thaw cycle pushes a concrete pile upward over time, leaving an uneven fence. The City of Winnipeg has recommended this frost-line approach since the late 1990s.

Top Rail & Tension Wire
Top rail is run between posts and secured. Tension wire runs along the bottom to keep the mesh taut and prevent animals from pulling it up.

Mesh Stretching & Fastening
The mesh is unrolled, stretched tight using a come-along, and secured to the top rail and tension wire. Proper tension is the difference between a fence that sags and one that stays straight.

How long does chain link last in Manitoba's climate?

Do I need a permit for chain link in Winnipeg?

Can I get a gate added later?
Yes, gates can be added to an existing chain link fence as long as the post spacing accommodates it. If you think you might want a gate in the future, it’s usually cheaper to plan for it upfront.
What's the difference between galvanized and black coated?
Galvanized is bare steel with a zinc coating — silver-grey in appearance, the most affordable option. Black vinyl-coated has an additional PVC layer applied over the wire. Both are durable; the choice is mostly about appearance and budget.
Do you do repairs on existing chain link?
